The Head of Department Chemical Sciences, Dr. (Mrs) Ihuoma Adekunle says the Federal University Otuoke is poised to producing employable and marketable graduates that will be relevant in all spheres of human endeavour.
Dr. Adekunle said this when she recently led Students of Chemistry Department on an excursion to Alpha Star Paint Industry, Yenagoa.
Expressing readiness to produce quality graduates as the reason for the excursion, the Head of Department said such activities are necessary to practically expose the Students to paint production so that they gain all the knowledge they need.
“We do not really have all the necessary facilities in the four walls of the University, so it became necessary to expose these students outside the Institution and the most reasonable place is the industrial sector” she said.
She regretted the calibre of graduates being produced by Nigerian Universities and assured of the Institution’s desire to make a difference by holistically training its students.
“Since I assumed duty I have keyed into the vision of the university to make sure that the graduates we produce eventually are not just graduates that have ordinary paper qualification, but have the experience” the lecturer said.
A Lecturer in the Department of Chemical Sciences, Dr. Stephen Uzoekwe while reacting on the excursion maintained that FUO is determined to training graduates that will be self reliant.
According to Dr. Stephen Uzoekwe, “We have designed a programme different from other Universities- In that we have courses like Entrepreneur Chemistry and some of the practicals have to with manufacturing and synthesis of some of these compounds”.
Earlier, the General Manager, Manufacturing Alpha Star Paint Industry, Pastor Oni Abolaji exposed the students on the theoretical aspect of paint production which according to him if applied will help the students to be employers of labour after graduation.
On his part, the Quality Control Manager of the Company, Mr. Omoshola Oriretan who carried out the Practicals, took the students round the facility and gave them the opportunity to produce a paint to ensure that they understood the processes.
Mr. Omoshola Oriretan was quick to commend the students for their learning prowess, siting that they displayed brilliant performance even on their first time at the paint manufacturing industry.
One of the students, Ugwumba Obianuju said the practical experience on paint production is enormous, stating that the knowledge gained has exposed them and increased their understanding of the lectures had in the classroom.
The Class Representative gave the vote of thanks on behalf of the Team, thanking the Management of Alpha Star Paint Industry for hosting them, he did not also relent in expressing the gratitude of his course mate to his Department and Management of FUO for organizing the trip.
